A Fresh Start: Turning Struggles into Creative Strength
As we stand at the start of a new year, it’s easy to feel the weight of societal expectations—new habits, grand resolutions, and promises to “be better.” But this year, I invite you to think differently. What if fresh starts weren’t about rigid rules or overnight transformations but about a gentle, intentional shift in how we live and create?
My guest on the latest episode of The Mood Podcast, Sebastian Belaustegui, has been a friend for a while since I first interviewed him almost 4 years ago on Instagram Live when I was starting this podcast (if you could’ve called it that haha!), and he has always been a man who exuded positivity and love of his passion - photography.
In our recent meet up in person though, he had clearly been through a lot since we last spoke, and he offered a profound perspective that resonates deeply at this time of year…
“The strongest journey I’ve ever taken wasn’t outward—it was inward. Real change happens when you’re brave enough to meet yourself where you are.”
The Art of Rebuilding
Sebastian’s story with us begins in a dark place: a health crisis that left him battling chronic tinnitus, insomnia, and deep depression. For years, he felt trapped, unable to work, struggling to see the path forward. Yet, instead of resisting these challenges, he chose to sit with them. Slowly, he began rebuilding—not with grand leaps, but through small, intentional acts.
He embraced exercise, meditation, and a cleaner lifestyle, finding clarity in daily rituals.
He rediscovered photography not as a job, but as a way to process his emotions and connect with the world.
He gave himself permission to evolve, understanding that growth isn’t about “going back” to who you were, but becoming something new.
This isn’t a story of instant success. It’s a testament to patience, self-compassion, and the power of showing up, even when it feels impossible.
Creativity as a Lifeline
Sebastian’s journey highlights something we often overlook: the connection between creativity and healing. He shared how his renewed perspective changed the way he approached his craft. No longer was photography just about the technical perfection of light and shadow; it became a form of mindfulness, a way to ground himself in the present.
“Photography isn’t just a skill—it’s a reflection of how you see the world,” he said. And isn’t that the heart of art? To give voice to what’s within, even when words fail….?
Actually Suki’s workshops now blend photography with breathing exercises and meditation, teaching students that creativity flourishes when we’re kind to ourselves. It’s not about perfection; it’s about presence.
“Once you survive something difficult, the most meaningful thing you can do is share your story and help others. Creativity is my way of doing that.”
Moving Forward with Intention
As we step into 2025, Sebastian’s story serves as a powerful reminder: true change isn’t about fixing ourselves or conforming to external pressures. It’s about recognizing where we are, honoring our struggles, and making space for growth to happen naturally.
Let go of the “New Year, New You” mindset—it’s a construct that creates unnecessary pressure.
Instead, focus on small, meaningful changes. What habits, routines, or creative outlets feel right for you now? What works for me, and not necessarily just the advice or preachings (yes, everyone is a know-it-all these days) of others?
Give yourself grace. Progress is messy, nonlinear, and deeply personal.
This year, let’s commit not to perfection, but to curiosity. Let’s allow creativity to lift us from difficult times and guide us toward something meaningful. After all, the best fresh starts aren’t forced,
They’re felt.
